We're taking a disco beat and just using it to create a couple of licks for fun:

Lick 1 - Simply repeat these 3 powerchord shapes, each note picked in order: Bb5 - F5 - C5

Repeat this throughout the whole tune. Over the top we added a little harmony in places:

Lick 2a - Notice that the notes here are played at the same time as the notes underneath (from Lick 1). If you like it and want to play along, but find the fingering tricky, we show an alternative way to play the same lick later in the tune:

Lick 2b - This is exactly the same notes as Lick 2b, but played up the neck, where the finger positions are a little easier. The tradeoff here is that the strings are thicker and you may not get quite the same brightness to the sound. Just turn up the treble on your tone knob / amp to compensate.

The notes are all based on the Bb major scale: Bb - C - D - Eb - F - G - A - Bb

To be versatile with guitar is a good thing. One way to do this is to take backing beats and put together little licks with them. If you use just drums for backing music you will have free reign to make any music you like. Starting with a raw beat is a good place to start afresh and work out ideas.

If you are interested in making your own music, you can start with free recording software like Audacity. You can load your own mp3's into it and record yourself playing along. For example, just pop in the backing beat, plug your guitar / amp into your computer and record. You can record different layers of music to create your own harmonies - even get a microphone and sing. It's the digital age and recording has never been so accessible!
